How to Make Whipped Tallow Balm

I’m excited to share my process for making all-natural whipped tallow balm using beef tallow from our ranch! This nourishing balm is perfect for keeping your skin moisturized and healthy. Here’s how I do it:

Step 1: Render the Beef Tallow

Start by rendering down the beef tallow in your crockpot. Pour filtered water over diced-up tallow and add salt to help draw out the “beefy bits,” leaving you with pure rendered tallow (side note: tallow is rendered beef fat!). Once it’s fully melted, strain it through a fine mesh strainer and let the collected tallow cool in the fridge or on the counter.

Step 2: Prepare the Tallow

After cooling, remove the tallow from the collection pan and scrape the bottom until it looks pure white. Make sure to pat it dry if you’re not completing all the steps in one go—any leftover water can affect the final product. This entire rendering process takes about 8 hours, but it's worth the wait!

Step 3: Melt and Mix

Next, break the rendered tallow into small chunks and place them in a double boiler. Heat until fully melted, then add 1 part carrier oil (I use extra virgin olive oil, but jojoba or avocado oil also works well) to 4 parts melted tallow. Allow this mixture to cool in the fridge for 2-3 hours until it reaches a putty-like texture.

Step 4: Whip It Up!

Remove the mixture from the fridge and whip it with a stand or hand mixer for 2-4 minutes. It should nearly double in size, so choose your bowl accordingly!

Step 5: Add Scents (Optional)

You can now dispense the whipped tallow into airtight jars. If you’d like to add a scent, include about 40-50 drops of essential oil per cup of whipped tallow. I love adding lavender to one batch, a blend of half orange and half lemon to another, and I keep one unscented for those who prefer a minimalist moisturizer.
